Barbers in Hitchin — built on precision, not volume.

Squire Barbering is an independent, appointment-only barbers in the heart of Hitchin. One chair. One barber. Twelve years of experience behind every cut. If you're tired of conveyor-belt haircuts and want a barber in Hitchin who actually listens, you're in the right place.

Why Squire

A different kind of barbers in Hitchin

Most barbers in Hitchin work on volume — walk in, sit down, ten minutes, next. That model has its place, but it's not what we do. Squire Barbering is appointment-only by design. When you book a slot, that time is yours. No queue, no rush, no chair hopping.

James Stevens has spent over a decade behind the chair across some of Hertfordshire's most respected studios before opening Squire on Bucklersbury, just steps from Hitchin Market Square. The whole studio is built around one thing: getting the cut right, every time.

Whether you want a tight skin fade, a textured crop, a classic scissor cut, or a full beard sculpt, the process is the same — consultation first, then precision work, then a finish you can actually replicate at home. We work with all hair types and all ages, from kids' first cuts to OAP regulars.

The studio itself is small and deliberate. One chair, one barber, no music blaring over the conversation. You get a proper consultation before the clippers come out, water and a coffee while you sit down, and a finish that's built to grow out well — not just look sharp for the first 48 hours.

The process

What to expect on your first visit

New to Squire? Here's exactly how an appointment works — no surprises, no awkward bits.

01

Book online

Pick your service and a time that suits you on Fresha. Takes under a minute. You’ll get an instant confirmation and a reminder the day before.

02

Consultation

We talk before we cut. Reference photos, lifestyle, how often you want to come back, what’s grown out wrong before — all of it shapes the plan.

03

Precision work

Wash, cut, fade, scissor work, beard. The full focus is on you for the duration of the slot — no walk-ins jumping in halfway through.

04

Finish & styling

Styled the way you’ll wear it day-to-day, with honest advice on product if you want it. Pay, rebook if you want, walk out looking sharp.

What we do

Cuts & styles we specialise in

Not a menu — these are the styles that walk through the door most weeks and that we've spent years refining.

Skin fades

Tight, gradient fades from skin up — taper, low, mid, high. Built clean from a guard, blended out by hand, finished with a straight razor through the hairline.

Textured crops

The modern French/Italian crop. Disconnected fringe, soft texture through the top, sharp lines around the ear and neck. Works on most face shapes.

Classic scissor work

Longer, weight-removed scissor cuts that grow out properly. For when you don’t want clipper lines or a fade — just a well-shaped, layered cut.

Beard sculpting

Full beard shape-up — cheek line, neck line, lip line, and length blend. Done with clippers and a straight razor for clean edges that hold for weeks.

Hair & beard combos

The most common booking. Cut and beard done together so the proportions match — most clients get this every 3–4 weeks.

Kids & OAP cuts

Patient, no-rush cuts for under-14s and gents over 65. Same precision, dedicated rates, and a calm chair for first-time visitors.

The studio

Why appointment-only?

Walk-in barbers run on volume — short slots, fast turnover, queues out the door on a Saturday. It works for some shops, but it puts a ceiling on what the barber can actually deliver.

Booking ahead means we know exactly how long your service needs. A standard cut gets a real 35-minute slot. A hair-and-beard combo gets 50. There's time for a proper consultation, time to do the detail work right, and time to finish without rushing because someone is waiting.

It also means your time is respected. You arrive, you sit straight in the chair, you leave on schedule. No two-hour Saturday wait. No guessing whether it's worth the trip.

Undivided attention

One client at a time. No splitting focus between three chairs.

12+ years experience

What clients say

Reviews from Hitchin

Best barber in Hitchin, hands down. James takes real care with every cut and the studio is always spotless. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

John D. · March 2026

Finally found a barber who actually listens. The attention to detail is unreal — every fade is clean and the beard work is next level.

Mark T. · February 2026

Appointment-only is the way to go. No waiting around, straight into the chair. The whole experience feels premium without being pretentious.

The barber

James Stevens

Founder & Barber · 12+ years

James founded Squire Barbering after more than a decade working across some of Hertfordshire's most respected studios. He opened the Bucklersbury studio with one intention: to do the kind of focused, considered work that high-volume shops rarely have time for.

Confidence starts with how you present yourself. A great haircut isn't vanity - it's armour. Whether you're walking into a boardroom, a first date, or your wedding day, you should feel ready.

He works across all hair types and ages, and has built a loyal client base of professionals, dads, students and OAPs who come back every three to six weeks.
